What I Found In The Fridge At Work...

I was putting my lunch into the fridge at work this morning, when I saw something that made me really sad. HCG. Have you heard of this diet lately? It was the fad a few months ago, and continues to be a fad today. HCG stands for human chorionic gonadotropin, a hormone produced during pregnancy. HCG is not approved to be sold over-the-counter and has not been proven to work to increase weight loss. What you buy over the counter is "hormone free HCG" which hasn't been proven to work either. The plan that is "prescribed" to go with the diet is what scares me the most. It's a crash diet that makes you lose weight. They tell you to follow a strict 500 calorie PER DAY diet. That, my friends, would make anyone lose weight. Except its dangerous and pointless! When you restrict calories below 1,200 per day, your body enters into starvation mode. It clings onto any fat stores it can, and it causes you to lose water weight and muscle weight. When you eventually increase calories again, the body stores every nutrient it possibly can, causing you to gain all that weight back again.
My advice to "Sam" in the fridge: Follow a healthy, well-balanced diet that includes fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins. You didn't put on the weight overnight, and its not going to go away overnight. Keep your head up and don't waste your money on the fad diet. Spend your money on healthy, natural foods that your body will get nourishment from.
Have you ever tried a fad diet? What's your opinion?

  1. Thank you SO much for posting this! I got lured into the HCG diet a little over a year ago and I did indeed lose weight really fast. But, you are exactly right in saying that such restricted calorie intake will cause anyone to lose weight! And I sure gained it back! I have heard (from a nurse) that there has been links to this diet or hormone and cancer! I think this is definitely a fad and honestly a scam.

  2. I remember hearing about this but I never knew what the actual diet was or anything. Why would anyone want to do that? Talk about ruining your metabolism!

  3. SCARY! Fad diets never work....people just want a quick fix! Work hard and eat right, that's all there is too it :)

  4. Even 1200 is possibly too low for long term dieting, but I have a friend who did this and it was shocking to me that she would use something like that. Crazy.
