21 Day Fix: Day 1

Yesterday was Day 1 of the 21 Day Fix for me! I’m still finishing up ChaLEAN Extreme (which I’m loving), so I’m altering the workouts a bit for the first 2 weeks. As a dietitian, and self-proclaimed “healthy eater,” I am excited to get my brain in the game with this 3 week program. The eating plan is going to re-teach me correct portion sizes, as well as TIMING my meals (which I’m HORRIBLE at). My motivation is super easy—Joe-Joe and I are traveling a LOT this spring, one of which is our cruise in May. I want abs and sculpted arms for that baby!


I spent Wednesday night reading through the nutrition guide and understanding what I was supposed to eat and when. Your container allowance is based on your weight and an average calorie burn of 400 per every 30 minute Fix workout. Then you are given a range. My range is from 1,200 calories to 1,500 calories. Yesterday I didn’t eat out of my containers, rather just used them as a measuring guide and poured my meals onto plates. I also found 2 disposable containers at work that are the perfect size for Red and Orange container foods – I’ll definitely be using them to help cut back on the dishwashing! Haha.
Day 1 workout is Total Body Cardio – with WEIGHTS! I love weights. It started out seeming fairly easy to me. I mean, I’ve been lifting heavy weights and squatting with ChaLEAN Extreme, so the leg stuff wasn’t a problem. Then came Round 2, and I realized this trainer is no joke. I had to modify some of the moves because my muscles were burning and my heart was racing. Good thing there’s always a modifier on the screen to show you what to do.
My biggest challenge is tonight and tomorrow. Joe and I are going to Chicago for the outdoor hockey game, and that means eating out and drinking! I know my eating won’t be perfect, but I’m going to do 2 double days to make up for the extra champagne I’ll be consuming. Big bonus of the 21 Day Fix eating plan – alcohol can be built into your program! You just substitute and yellow container for a glass and you’re still on track. Autumn Calabrese (creator of the program) is my GIRL! Love that she included real life into her plan. She also has killer abs which motivate me during the workouts.
Joe-Joe is my accountability at night. He knows that I’m a sucker for coming home and munching on some pretzels or apple with peanut butter on the couch (doesn’t sound bad, but I probably end up eating like ½ cup of peanut butter!!) He’s making sure I don’t sabotage myself. Love him! My other accountability partners are in my challenge group! We all posted our before pictures and are talking about what our goals are and where we struggle. I’m just as excited for their transformation as I am for mine!

Hidden Meanings and Ramblings

Messages come from all different places and faces.

"The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results."

Once I took a step back, I realized that this verse meant so much to me not because of its obvious text, but because of the hidden meaning that only I saw that day. To me, it means that the PASSION of someone who is trying to HELP another, not only has great power but will produce great results. I hope I don't offend anyone by taking this into the business world, but I'm gonna.  This is how I run my business--with true committment to helping others. When you come from a place of wanting to help others and not use them to get ahead for yourself, you see amazing things start to happen. The amazing things that are happening in my business right now are NOT because I try to sell workout programs to every person I meet, or make someone buy Shakeology--it's because I've consistantly been there for people when they start their journey and I help them when they're ready. Believe me, I know that I'm far from perfect. I'm not the size 2, ripped woman that I some days wish to be. I'm the average size 8 woman, who has insecurities and is trying to be better. Does that make me "righteous"...um, no. But I think that makes me a good person, and a relatable person.  

But I digress.

I've been really pushing myself in my workouts lately and I'm seeing the muscle definition as proof. This last phase of ChaLEAN Extreme is called the "Lean Phase" and its because it utilizes doing both upper body and lower body exercises together. When you do them together, you're forced to use your abs to stabilize, and get ripped without even doing a crunch (AKA my kinda workout). I did circuit 1 on Saturday and couldn't move my arms for 2.5 days, then I did circuit 2 on Monday and currently STILL am sore in my back (lots of rows!), and today was circuit 3. It was totally focused on shoulders while incorporating squats, lunges and deadlifts. If this workout follows suit, then I should barely be able to move my shoulders by 7am. Luckily tomorrow I'm doing interval training :)

Joe-Joe and I also got a new bed delivered!! I'm currently typing this post from it because I find it hard to avoid it past 7pm. P.s- if you know of any good deals on bedding, LET ME KNOW! We may have bought a new bed, but I'm still super cheap.

Super Easy Sweet Potato Curry

Well, the snow is back again in Wisconsin. Blahhh!! I'm so ready for Spring weather! Partly because I'm also ready for the heating bill to go down. It's expensive to heat an apartment! No wonder my parents always kept the house at like 64 degrees growing up.
 
Anyway, the cold weather is good for one thing: hot food! Tonight I was craving some Indian take out, but instead decided to give it a go in my Ninja Cooking System (have I mentioned how much I love this 1 pot wonder??). Here's what I came up with! I had all of the ingredients already except the Coconut Milk, which is a pretty good recipe if you ask me :)
 
Sweet Potato Curry
 
 
 
Ingredients:
  • 2 Tbsp Vegetable Oil
  • 1 Onion, Diced
  • 3 Tbsp Curry Powder
  • 1 Tbsp Ground Cumin
  • 1 tsp Ground Cinnamon
  • 3 Sweet Potatoes, Peeled and Diced (make the dice fairly small so that they cook within the 25 minutes of simmering)
  • 1 (14.5 oz) Can Lite Coconut Milk
  • 1 (14.5 oz) Can Diced Tomatoes
  • 1 (14.5 oz) Can Chickpeas, Drained and Rinsed
  • 1/2 cup Water
 
Directions:
  1. In a large skillet (or Ninja Cooking System!), heat the oil over medium-high heat. Stir in the diced onion and all spices. Cook until onions have begun to get soft.
  2. Add the rest of your ingredients to the pan and stir.
  3. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 25 minutes.
  4. Serve over brown rice or with Naan (which I totally wish I had!)

How To: Avoid Boring Water

So since I've been sick over the past 2 weeks (seriously don't know why it won't go away!!!) I've been drinking just water. It's hard to get enough water when you just don't feel like drinking it, so I wanted to share my favorite ways to flavor! I always avoid flavor packets like Crystal Light or Propel, just because they have fake sugars that I don't enjoy the taste of.

But, besides adding lemon to water...what else is there? Here are a few ideas and some of my favorites! For all of these, let the fruit infuse overnight!
  • Berry Nice: 3 sliced strawberries, 10 fresh mint leaves (crush them so the flavor comes out) per pitcher
  • Tropical: 6 chunks of fresh pineapple per pitcher
  • All Citrus'd Out: 1/4 lemon, 1/4 lime, 1/2 orange per pitcher
  • Twisted Lemon: 1/2 lemon, 10 raspberries per pitcher
  • Flat Belly Mixer: 1 lemon, 1 cucumber, 1 orange per pitcher, 10 fresh mint leaves per pitcher
 
How do you mix it? Use a large pitcher, or if you're lazy like me...invest in the beauty!!
I found my pitcher at Bed, Bath and Beyond here. It works really well, fits perfect in my fridge and makes the water look so tempting :)

I'm a Commercial for Hall's Fruit Breezers

I seriously hate getting sick. I'm no good at it. I always say that I want to sit around and do nothing, but when the time comes that I really HAVE to sit around and do nothing....I'm itching to workout, cook or go out somewhere. This weekend I've been a commercial for Hall's and Advil Cold and Sinus. Usually my Shakeology keeps me from getting sick, but there's nothing that can keep you healthy 100% of the time. A couple of my employees came in with colds, and when we all share everything it was bound to happen. So here I sit, cuddled up on the couch just wishing that I could get some cardio in....guaranteed if I was feeling 100% healthy I wouldn't even be this motivated.
 
 
I've accomplished some things this weekend. The least important of which include finishing the current season of Top Chef and starting season 7 of Dexter. The more important of which was adding another new coach to my Beachbody Team! I'm so impressed by this girl and the results she's already had with TurboFire. She just purchased the 21 Day Fix and I know she'll rock it out. Can't wait to watch her transform her life -- physically and financially, and the lives of others! WELCOME KELSIE!
 
I also started reading a new book called "The Compound Effect." If you remember a while back I read a book that kinda kicked my butt off the couch, and it hooked me on personal development. I'm excited to see what I learn from this one!

Chocolate Chip Chickpea Cookie Dough Recipe

The 21 Day Fix is officially for sale!! The day brought so much excitement and so many new team members to me. I'm thrilled that these people have decided to change their lives and become the person they want to be. Its amazing how their motivation inspires me to be better. As much as I want to help them, I think they're helping me more.
 
In other news, I watched the Bowl yesterday...can't call it SUPER because, well, it was kind of sad. I hate seeing teams get beat by that much. Probably because I'm an Oakland Raiders fan and I feel like we always get beat by that much. Haha. I made a really delicious dip for the party, even though the boys made fun of it. Us girls loved it! Here it is!
 
 
Chocolate Chip Chickpea Cookie Dough

Ingredients:
  • 2 cans drained, rinsed chickpeas
  • 1/2 cup maple syrup
  • 3/4 cup peanut butter
  • 1 TBSP vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips
Directions:
  • Blend (the heck out of) the chickpeas. If you feel like committing to a real time commitment, shell the chickpeas first. This will allow the blend to be even creamier than the version I made (ain’t nobody got time fo’ that).
  • Add maple syrup, blend.
  • Add peanut butter, blend.
  • Add vanilla extract, blend. Continue blending until you get a texture that you like.
  • Place batter in container, add chocolate chips and fold in.
  • Refrigerate 1 hour to get a real cookie dough consistency. Enjoy with graham crackers or by the spoonful (my preferred method) :)
